Reflection
The Holocaust is a topic that I have always found very interesting. My father’s side of the family is Jewish, and they have taken much pride in their family name and historical background. When thinking about a topic to choose, I felt that the Holocaust would be interesting for me to learn more about, but it also would be a great way to learn more about my heritage. Throughout this project I have learned so much more about the Holocaust and especially its affects on children. It was very interesting for me to read the different stories from survivors, and to realize how this horrible event affected everyone in a different way. I had no idea the vast amount of children that hid during the Holocaust or that there were gracious people brave enough to care for these children. It has truly been an eye opening experience to a lifestyle I’m glad I never had to live. I am proud to say that I am of Jewish blood and that we were able to make it through such a horrible travesty.
I feel that I can take the knowledge I gained from this project and implement it into my classroom when I become a teacher myself. This topic can connect to the North Carolina Essential Standard 1.H.1. Which states “Understand that history tells a story of how people and events changed society over time. I think this standard would work well for this topic because what the children experienced during the Holocaust influenced how they were going to live their lives when they became adults. I think children will be able to relate to this topic because they too are children, and they will be able to find respect for the children who lived through the Holocaust.
I also feel that the process I went through to create this project will help me as a future social studies teacher as well. The ability to research and synthesize information is a skill that does not come easily for me. I was lucky enough to have a very organized professor who broke down this project for us to make it “do-able.” I will remember this when I become a social studies teacher, and I will make sure to push kids past their known limits, but I will be there to support them along the way. I learned a lot from this project, and I am very proud of what I have accomplished. I hope one day I will be able to help my students receive this same satisfaction and enjoyment.
